Infante Dom Henrique | Lagos | Portugal
Prince Henry the Navigator
was a central figure in the early days of the Portuguese Empire and
in the 15th-century European colonialism. Henry was responsible for
the early development of Portuguese exploration and maritime trade
with other continents through the systematic exploitation of Western
Africa, the islands of the Atlantic Ocean, and the search for new
routes. One of his motivations and economic gains relied on the slave
trade. Therefore in 1441 he created the first European Slave market
in the city of Lagos. The old market was converted in a slavery
museum, but its still situated in the Prince Henry The Navigator
Plaza.
