Pedro Álvares Cabral | São Paulo | Brazil
This monument marked the celebration of the 500 years of the Portuguese invasion in Brazil. In the Coat of Arms of Portugal there is a quote by Tancredo Neves: “We owe everything to Portugal: Our blood, our history, the origin of our free institutions, the wide space we inhabit”.
Cabral was the main character of the Portuguese invasion of Brazil in 1500, when the territory was inhabited by several indigenous peoples who have since suffered systematic genocide. The monument in honor of Pedro Álvares Cabral is located in Ibirapuera Park and was inaugurated on June 10, 1988, with a project by Agostinho Vidal da Rocha and made by Luiz Marrone.
