Padrão dos Descobrimentos | Lisbon | Portugal
Created by Estado Novo (Portuguese dictatorship) for the 1940’s Portuguese World Exhibition, to highlight the state propaganda and to inscribe the “discoveries” as indispensable for Portuguese identity. It was created as a temporary monument beside other buildings and a Human zoo, but in 1960, for the birthday commemoration of Henry the Navigator, Estado Novo decided to remake the monument permanently. The monument portraits a colonial vision of Portugal by depicting its most important colonisers.
