Queen Victoria | Auckland | New Zealand
Victoria stayed on
the throne for 63 years (from 1837 until 1901). During this time
Victoria was in front of the expansion of the British Empire,
colonizing a quarter of the world's land including countries such as
India, Zimbabwe, New Zealand and Australia. She became the Empress of
India in 1877. Until 1932, the British empire controlled the entire
population of India - more than three hundred million people - with
the help of only 60 thousand British military and police. It was
during Victoria-time that stricter boundaries were established
between classes of society, standards of behavior for men and women,
a system of prohibitions and norms of behavior.
