Friedrich I | Berlin | Germany
During Friedrich I reign
Großfriedrichsburg (in present-day Ghana), was a Brandenburg colony
(1683-1717) and was the central hub of trade in enslaved people. In
the 29 years of the Brandenburg-African Company, created by his
father - Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg - about 19,000
Africans survived the passage to America and were sold to plantation
owners or exchanged by colonial goods which could be sold in Europe.
The company calculated a death rate between 7 and 12% in the
transport of the enslaved people. In 1711 Frederick I declared the
financial bankruptcy of the colony Großfriedrichsburg and sold it
six years later to the Dutch West Indies Compagnie (VOC)
