Robert E. Lee | Charlottesville | US
For
decades distinct communities of the United States have been
pressuring officials to dismantle Robert E. Lee and other Confederate
monuments. Most of them were built during the era of Jim Crow laws
- collection of state and local statutes that legalized racial
segregation (1877–1964). Today activists across the US are calling
once again for the removal of these monuments, emphasizing the role
these symbols play in promoting white supremacist ideas. Confederate
Vice President Alexander H. Stephens explained in his 1861Cornerstone speech “Our new government’s foundations are
laid upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white
man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural
and normal condition.”
In the
beginning of June 2020 Virginia governor announced the removal of
Robert E. Lee monument from the city. Two weeks after a judge
indefinitely extended an injunction preventing the governor from
removing the monument. To preserve History?
